Carolyn Ryan is the Assistant Commissioner for Sustainability and Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) for the New York State Department of Transportation. A professional engineer, Carolyn has worked for the New York State Department of Transportation for more than 30 years and served in various transportation program and project management roles during her career with the agency. As the Chief Sustainability Officer, Carolyn represents the Department on the state’s GreenNY Council and oversees the development, implementation, and integration of sustainability principles and practices into Department programs, policies, and activities. Carolyn also serves in a key leadership role in the State’s Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI), which was formed in response to the devastating floods that took place along the Lake Ontario waterfront and sought to increase the resilience of shoreline communities and bolster economic development in the region. Carolyn has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Villanova University.
